From Detroit to Dorpat

As I said earlier, Carola and I went to lie on the bank of the Emajõgi yesterday. The day was so nice and the sun was so warm it would have been a crime not to go outside. We had a nice drive out into the countryside and had a picnic in the grass among all the new flowers blooming. We actually got so warm it sounded like a good idea to jump in the river for a bit. We forgot a towel, so we just waded in a bit, but it was so nice to feel the cool water on your skin, and then jump out and get warmed by the sun. Such things seemed so impossible and far off in January, now they are actually here. We layed in the sun and studied the Estonian language most of the afternoon. All in all a very nice day.

On the way to the river we passed a whole line of old American cars out for a weekend drive. One was flying the American flag out of its sunroof. Estonia is not France. It is interesting to see the American flag flying in front of a building built by Kruschev. JFK would enjoy that I think, in partial thanks to him the cold war ended much more nicely than anyone had imagined in could. And now people can drive old American cars around on a Saturday.
