Rob's Birthday Party

Carola and I went to Rob's Birthday Party yesterday. Rob is the manager of the local Irish pub. He is American, but his wife is from Dublin. Her name is Lee and she is in the Estonian class with me. It was a nice party with a wood-fired hot tub, fresh lamb, and lots of snacks. After spending so much time in the city centre it was nice to be out in the suburbs and see what it is like out there where there are lots of single family homes. While we were there the neighbours had a large load of wood delivered. They spent the afternoon carefully stacking it for next winter.

This street is about a 10 minute drive from my dorm. Many of the houses have big gardens in the back, and I think most houses have saunas inside. There is trash pickup, but not really a coordinated sewer system, or fire protection system.

This hot tub takes about three or four hours to heat up. One builds a small fire inside and lets that heat the water slowly. It is all made of wood, and leaks slightly until the wood swells enough to stop the leaks.

The clouds came over and it got a bit chilly, so we decided to build a fire. There is no problem with starting fires within the city limits here, people do it quite often to burn leaves and such.
